Σε μια στιγμή επιστροφής, στοχασμού και δημιουργικής εξέλιξης έντεκα χρόνια μετά την πρώτη της προσωπική παρουσία στην ίδια γκαλερί, η καλλιτέχνιδα επιστρέφει «στον γενέθλιο τόπο» με ένα σύνολο έργων που αποκαλύπτει όχι μόνο την τεχνική της διαδρομή, αλλά και την εσωτερική της αλληλουχία: τις εμπειρίες, τους κραδασμούς, τις μνήμες και τις προσδοκίες που τροφοδοτούν τη φαντασία της. Όπως η ίδια έχει επισημάνει στο παρελθόν, τα προσωπικά της βιώματα και ο συναισθηματικός της κόσμος είναι άρρηκτα δεμένα με τις εικόνες που δημιουργεί: Χαρά, λύπη, έρωτας, τρυφερότητα, νοσταλγία και ελπίδα συνυπάρχουν σαν στρώσεις φωτός πάνω σε έναν καμβά που δεν σταματά να μεταμορφώνεται.

Αυτή η ανάγκη έκφρασης –να αποτυπώνει «ό,τι αισθάνεται» και ταυτόχρονα να ανακαλύπτει νέους δρόμους– οδηγεί την Άννα Γερολυμάτου στον ψηφιακό πειραματισμό, σε μια δημιουργικότητα που, όπως λέει, τη βοηθά να ισορροπεί και να ανοίγει ορίζοντες. Η Digital Utopia είναι αποτέλεσμα αυτής της εξελικτικής διαδικασίας: ένα ταξίδι στον κόσμο της γυναίκας, της μνήμης, της φαντασίας και της τεχνολογίας. Στη συνέντευξη που ακολουθεί, η καλλιτέχνιδα μιλά για το πέρασμά της στην ψηφιακή τέχνη, για την αέναη σχέση της με την αυτογνωσία και το συναίσθημα, καθώς και για το πώς βλέπει την τέχνη να μεταμορφώνεται στο κατώφλι μιας εποχής όπου οι εικόνες –αλλά και οι δυνατότητες– πολλαπλασιάζονται.

Κυρία Γερολυμάτου, έντεκα χρόνια μετά την πρώτη προσωπική σας έκθεση στην Αθήνα, επιστρέφετε στην γκαλερί ArtZone42 και στο αθηναϊκό κοινό. Πείτε μας δύο λόγια για αυτή σας την επιλογή.

Η έκθεση Digital Utopia (Ψηφιακή Ουτοπία) είναι η δεύτερη ατομική μου έκθεση στην γκαλερί ArtZone42 στην Αθήνα. Επιστρέφω στον φιλόξενο χώρο της μετά από 11 χρόνια περιπλάνησης και συμμετοχής σε μεγάλες εκθέσεις κυρίως στην Ευρώπη.

Σήμερα στην Αθήνα, τον γενέθλιο τόπο μου, παρουσιάζονται 45 δημιουργίες μου.

Περνώντας στο καθαρά εικαστικό κομμάτι, ποιες είναι οι δημιουργίες που επιλέξατε για την έκθεση αυτή; Με τι θα έρθει αντιμέτωπος ο επισκέπτης της DIGITAL UTOPIA;

Στην Ψηφιακή Ουτοπία, η επιλογή του τίτλου συνάδει ακριβώς με αυτό που παρουσιάζω. Δηλαδή, μια σειρά από ουτοπικές εικόνες, όπου κύριο στοιχείο είναι η γυναίκα και τα διάφορα πρόσωπά της, τα οποία βλέπω μέσα από τις δικές μου προσλαμβάνουσες. Η γυναίκα μια πολυδιάστατη ύπαρξη, γεμάτη αντιθέσεις, όνειρα και ρόλους που διαμορφώνουν συνεχώς την ταυτότητά της. Αυτά τα πρόσωπα που αντανακλούν τις διαφορετικές πτυχές της ζωής της, τις εμπειρίες, τις επιλογές της. Η γυναίκα που εξελίσσεται και μεταμορφώνεται μέσα στο χρόνο χωρίς ποτέ να χάνει την ταυτότητά της. Ένα πλάσμα ζωντανό, πολύπλευρο, αέναο μέσα σε ένα ταξίδι αυτογνωσίας και έκφρασης που σίγουρα ταυτίζεται και με το δικό μου ταξίδι.

Στα έργα που παρουσιάζω σε αυτή την έκθεση όμως υπάρχουν και έργα με άλλα θέματα εκτός της γυναίκας καθώς η φαντασία μου με οδήγησε και σε άλλα μονοπάτια. Με βάση τα συναισθήματα τα οποία είναι πολύπλοκα και πολυδιάστατα και επηρεάζουν την ανθρώπινη εμπειρία και συχνά είναι δύσκολα να κατανοηθούν, προσπάθησα μέσα από τις χρωματικές αφηγήσεις που δημιούργησα, να προτείνω μια σειρά από έργα που ορίζονται από την επιθυμία μου φορές να επιστρέφω σε στιγμές του παρελθόντος, δίνοντας πολλές νότες νοσταλγίας αλλά πάντα με μια αισθητική να αγγίζει τον κόσμο της ονειρικής ατμόσφαιρας.

Στη δουλειά που παρουσιάζω σε αυτή την έκθεση μου δειλά ξεκίνησα και τη δημιουργία κινούμενων εικόνων και μικρών βίντεο, όπου εδώ πλέον μιλάμε για πειραματισμό με generative art. Το μέρος αυτό της δουλειάς μου παρουσιάζεται ήδη στο YouTube, όπου όποιος ενδιαφέρεται μπορεί την να παρακολουθεί μέσα από το κανάλι μου.

Σε παλαιότερη συνέντευξή μας είχαμε συζητήσει τόσο για τα κίνητρα της εικαστικής δημιουργίας όσο και για την τεχνοτροπία, τη χειροποίητη διαδικασία και τις πρώτες ύλες των έργων. Στην έκθεση DIGITAL UTOPIA βλέπουμε ξεκάθαρα την επιλογή και τον διάλογο με το ψηφιακό στοιχείο. Ποια είναι η ανάγκη έκφρασης μέσα από τη σύγχρονη τεχνολογία;

Στο διάστημα που μεσολάβησε από την τελευταία ατομική μου έκθεση στην Τήνο το 2022 έως την Αθήνα το 2025, πέρασα σε άλλη πλατφόρμα εργασίας, την ψηφιακή. Καθώς έχουμε μπει πλέον σε ένα άλλο κόσμο, ψηφιακό και σίγουρα ουτοπικό, κατά την προσωπική μου άποψη, η τέχνη αυτή επιτρέπει πολλή σκέψη και προκλήσεις σε κρίσιμα και μη ζητήματα. Η ψηφιακή τέχνη επιτρέπει σε μεγαλύτερο κοινό να έρθει σε επαφή με έργα που προηγουμένως ήταν λιγότερο προσβάσιμα.

Αναλογιζόμενη πως η ζωή είναι μια αέναη κυκλικότητα και ότι ο καθένας μας μέσα σε αυτό το εφήμερο την αντιλαμβάνεται με χιλιάδες αποχρώσεις, αποφάσισα να εκθέσω τις ονειροπολήσεις μου μέσα από το ψηφιακό κολάζ. Η μετάβαση στην ψηφιακή τέχνη ήταν ένα πείραμα με εντυπωσιακά αποτελέσματα για εμένα προσωπικά. Ξεκίνησα μια ημέρα να χαράζω καινούργιους δρόμους και κατευθύνσεις, μια επιλογή μέσα από τα πολλά και διαφορετικά μου βιώματα.

Τα έργα μου είναι εμπνευσμένα κυρίως από τα αναγνώσματά μου, την λογοτεχνία αλλά και την ποίηση.

Η Generation Alpha, η οποία «γεννήθηκε» περίπου από το 2010 και μετά, είναι η πρώτη γενιά που ανήκει εξ ολοκλήρου στον 21ο αιώνα και χαρακτηρίζεται από την πλήρη τεχνολογική της εξοικείωση και τις προηγμένες δεξιότητές της. Η συνομιλία σας με το κοινό πώς πιστεύετε ότι θα εξελιχθεί τα επόμενα χρόνια;

Οι σκέψεις μου γύρω από την ψηφιακή τέχνη είναι πολλές. Στις εκθέσεις που έχω δει εκτός Ελλάδας, το κοινό την χειροκροτεί καθώς έχει εξελιχθεί ραγδαία τόσο στον τρόπο δημιουργίας όσο και στην αντίληψη της τέχνης. Το τοπίο της αγοράς έχει αλλάξει, επιτρέποντας τη ψηφιακή ιδιοκτησία και συλλεκτικότητα, με κάποιες αμφιλεγόμενες πτυχές όσον αφορά την ηθική και το περιβαλλοντικό αποτύπωμα.

Γενικότερα, η ψηφιακή τέχνη χρησιμοποιείται όλο και περισσότερο για να εκφράσει κοινωνικά μηνύματα και να αμφισβητήσει κατεστημένες αντιλήψεις. Είναι μια συναρπαστική και δυναμική πραγματικότητα που συνεχίζει να εξελίσσεται με τις αδιάκοπτες τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις.

Όμως, όπως όλες οι τέχνες έτσι και αυτή έχει τις δυσκολίες της. Με σωστή ενημέρωση όμως και προσεκτική χρήση, αυτές μπορούν να αντιμετωπιστούν. Το σίγουρο είναι ότι και εδώ μιλάμε για πολλές και διαφορετικές προσκλήσεις όπως υπερπληθώρα εικόνων, κορεσμό αλλά και ψυχολογικές προκλήσεις λόγω σύγκρισης και ανταγωνισμού και φυσικά το πρόβλημα της αυθεντικότητας και της αξίας των έργων.

Θέλοντας και μη, η εποχή μας χαρακτηρίζεται από έντονο διάλογο αναφορικά με τη χρήση της τεχνολογίας σε όλους τους τομείς της ζωής μας, ακόμα και στην Τέχνη. Ένα νέο κομμάτι, αυτό της τεχνητής νοημοσύνης, δείχνει πως ακόμη και η εικαστική δημιουργία μπορεί να γεννηθεί εκτός της ανθρώπινης δυνατότητας. Ποιες είναι οι σκέψεις σας για την Τέχνη σε αυτό το συνεχώς μεταβαλλόμενο περιβάλλον;

Η χρήση της ψηφιακής τεχνολογίας στην τέχνη, χωρίς ακόμα να έχω εντάξει μέσα στη δουλειά μου την τεχνική νοημοσύνη, επεκτείνει τις δυνατότητες της παραδοσιακής δημιουργίας με υλικά. Μου δίνει τη δυνατότητα να «κατασκευάσω» τις σκέψεις μου με πιο πολλά στοιχεία και να φτιάξω ένα ακόμα πιο φαντασιακό κόσμο. Επομένως, εμπλουτίζει το καλλιτεχνικό πεδίο, προσφέροντάς μου νέα εργαλεία για τις δημιουργίες μου. Ο πειραματισμός γίνεται και εδώ συναρπαστικός κυρίως γιατί χρησιμοποιώ διαφορετικά λογισμικά, χωρίς κανένα περιορισμό. Ο ψηφιακός πειραματισμός μου επιτρέπει να να βλέπω αμέσως τα αποτελέσματα των αλλαγών που κάνω, να τις προσαρμόζω άμεσα, ένα στοιχείο που ενισχύει τη δημιουργική διαδικασία. Φυσικά, αυτή η ευελιξία και άμεση ανατροφοδότηση μου δίνει τη δυνατότητα να εκφράζομαι όπως ακριβώς έχω φανταστεί αυτό που θέλω να δημιουργήσω.

Η ψηφιακή τέχνη έχει κάνει τα πρώτα βήματά της με τη χρήση υπολογιστών για τη δημιουργία γραφικών και εικόνων με πρωτοπόρους καλλιτέχνες τον γερμανό μαθηματικό και καλλιτέχνη Frieder Nake, τον Harold Cohen, ο οποίος δημιούργησε το πρόγραμμα AARON, ένα από τα πρώτα προγράμματα που παράγει αυτόματα ζωγραφικά έργα, την Vera Molnár, μια από τις πρώτες γυναίκες που από τη δεκαετία του 1960 πειραματίζεται με γεωμετρικά μοτίβα μέσω του ηλεκτρονικού υπολογιστή έως σήμερα με τον Beeple, ο οποίος έγινε γνωστός για τα καθημερινά ψηφιακά έργα του και την πώληση του ΝFT Everydays: The first 5000 days, το οποίο πωλήθηκε για πολλά εκατομμύρια δολάρια, αλλά και τον PAK, ένα μυστηριώδη καλλιτέχνη ο οποίος πειραματίζεται με αφηρημένες μορφές, γνωστός για καινοτόμες προσεγγίσεις στην ψηφιακή ιδιοκτησία και φυσικά πολλοί άλλοι καλλιτέχνες.

Ποια είναι τα προσωπικά και τα καλλιτεχνικά σας σχέδια για το 2026;

Με ρωτάτε για τα μελλοντικά μου σχέδια. Δεν ξέρω να πω με σιγουριά που θα με οδηγήσει η τεχνολογία, καθώς καθημερινά έρχομαι σε επαφή με καινούργια εργαλεία που δίνουν όλο και περισσότερες δυνατότητες.

Όμως στα σχέδια μου εντάσσεται και μια τελείως διαφορετική άποψη, η οποία θα καθορίζεται από την απλότητα και την καθαρότητα των μορφών με μια επιστροφή στη ζωγραφική. Μινιμαλιστική ζωγραφική σε συνδυασμό με κάποιες κατασκευές από διάφορα υλικά. Είναι πολύ νωρίς για να μιλήσω για αυτή την παρουσίαση καθώς ακόμα είμαι στη διαδικασία της έμπνευσης. Είναι μια επιλογή η οποία θα προωθήσει την απομυθοποίηση της πολυπλοκότητας των έως σήμερα έργων μου, μέσα από την οποία θα προσπαθήσω να ισορροπήσω την εύρεση της ουσίας στα βασικά στοιχεία της μορφής και του χρώματος.

All of the above, however subjective it may sound, perfectly describes the musical art that Panos Gourgiotis and his “King as Slave” alter ego, Pavlos Monastiriotis, have passionately supported for years. Contrast, experimentation, an unfulfilled desire, or the culmination of a musical journey?

In today’s discussion, Panos Gourgiotis introduces himself and the alternative musical world of King as Slave—a world we cannot wait to immerse ourselves in on February 15th at the well-known Pilar in Brussels.

Let’s start from the beginning: How would you introduce the band King as Slave?

Panos and Pavlos. It’s the natural evolution of our relationship! Collaborators and companions in many different music projects over the years, and best friends, we are fulfilling a shared dream with this band. We describe ourselves as an experimental, alternative duo that combines electronic textures and alternative rock sound with poetic lyricism. At the same time, we aim to create a sonic landscape that transcends traditional genres.

How does the name of the band connect with its music and the two of you as the creative protagonists and performers?

Pavlos came up with the name. We loved the obvious symbolism behind it: how close a “king” can be to a “slave,” how easily one can switch places with the other, and, in general, how fluid life is. There’s also the idea that within something negative, there’s always a ray of light, and vice versa. Especially this latter idea perfectly reflects the essence of the band. Our music is imbued with this sense of bittersweetness and constant emotional shifts. Even in our lyrics, when telling a possibly sad story, there’s always room for a smile.

How did the inspiration for this sound come about, and what were the first steps in forming the band?

It happened gradually; it wasn’t a conscious effort to form a new band. During the lockdowns caused by the pandemic, I began experimenting with analog synthesizers. This gradually developed into musical pieces that started taking shape. I then challenged myself to write seven songs in a week—one song per day. The second week, I recorded one song per day, and the third week, I mixed and processed one song per day. I succeeded, and in three weeks, I had a seven-track album. Pavlos then listened to it and said, “This is great, but it needs a lot of work to properly structure the songs.” From then on, an additional song was added to the seven, and we spent three years recording, experimenting, and refining. And now, we present it to you—not after three weeks, but after more than three years.

What is the reception of this genre of music in Belgium and Europe, and how has the audience responded to King as Slave’s music?

The fact that our music doesn’t clearly belong to any genre is both a blessing and a curse. While it gives our sound some uniqueness, it also makes it harder to reach the right audience. In my opinion, many of our influences are present in the music, in more or less obvious ways. I’m certain that fans of artists like Depeche Mode, Moby, Radiohead, Massive Attack, or genres like alternative, electronic pop-rock, melodic pop, and atmospheric rock will find something appealing in our sound. So far, we’ve released two singles from the album, “Like Nothing” and “All In”, which have been well-received and played on radio stations worldwide, including in the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada, and various Central European countries.

Gold, the new album by King as Slave, will be presented in Brussels. Tell us a bit about this new musical venture and what the audience can expect at Pilar on Saturday, February 15th.

We can’t wait. The album will be released on the day of the concert, February 15th, through the London-based label State51. After a long time, we’re feeling that wonderful creative anxiety again. This concert will be a big celebration for us, our biggest moment yet—until the next one. We know it might be years before we experience a night like this again, and we want to enjoy it to the fullest with all our old and new friends, who we are sure will be there to fill us with their love, as always. We’ve prepared a carefully crafted performance, complemented by engaging visuals, which we hope will be rewarding for everyone. It certainly helps that Pilar is an exceptional venue. Joining us on stage will be some surprise guest musicians and Giouli. Although she is not officially a member of the band, she is essentially the third pillar, having been part of the entire album-making process and contributing vocals to several songs.

What would be your advice for someone to fully enjoy the music of King as Slave?

I’d split my answer into two parts. The first relates to the concert. I’d suggest arriving early, having a drink, and allowing yourself to immerse in new music—exploring something fresh and uncharted. I know that in today’s fast-paced world, it’s hard to dedicate time and attention to something unfamiliar, but how often do we truly get the chance to do so? The second part concerns listening to the music at home afterward. This isn’t just about our music but how we listen to music in general nowadays. I’d recommend giving music the value it deserves. Don’t just play it in the background—focus on it for a while. It’s an experience that’s becoming rare, and we often forget how therapeutic and liberating it can be. Specifically, for our music, I’d suggest playing it loud! Whether at the concert or through recordings, you’ll hear our truth and soul, as we’ve managed to capture them after years of hard work. We hope there’s something in it for you too.

Mrs Nerantzaki, we welcome you to our first interview of the new year with the main topic, in this first conversation with you, the Greek culture. We will ask you to begin this interview with your own wishes for both Greek Culture and for the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy in Belgium, which you lead. 

Thank you very much for your hospitality! First of all, I wish the whole world a much more beautiful and optimistic New Year, full of big smiles and meaningful communication. For Greek Culture, I wish for greater extroversion and for the Institute, substantial initiatives with impact.

Let’s take things from the beginning and ask you to tell us how the organisation, which has been established at the end of 2020, is set up and what is its main purpose?

The Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy in Belgium (HICDB) is a scientific, non-governmental organisation with a non-profit purpose, which operates by developing activities related to the creation and promotion of knowledge of Greek culture in Belgium and aims at the study, analysis, dissemination and promotion by all means, of all aspects of Cultural Diplomacy. It is worth mentioning that the term Cultural Diplomacy is a new term, it is a tool of international communication and understanding and it works as a defense of the cultural character of countries in order to promote their intangible characteristics and their interests. It is based on “Soft Power”, which is based on the power of attraction and cooperation, as opposed to hard tactics such as coercion and the intervention of military forces.

The aim is to set a new narrative for the image of Greece, promoting the heritage and contemporary culture of the country through extroversion, intercultural cooperation (synergies) and scientific research. It is an action that looks to the future and comes to amplify Greece’s mark on the global scene.

Could we summarize the audience to which you refer as the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy in Belgium?

We primarily address the international audience in Belgium, which is why we have chosen English as the official language of the organisation. This can be Philhellenes, but also people who just want to know more about the culture of the country. Age-wise, we cater for all ages, especially the younger audience. This is one of the reasons why the organisation hosts Erasmus+ students for internships.

Is Philhellenism and the Philhellenes an additional bridge in your efforts?

The Philhellenes are the main, I would say, bridge. In fact, «Philhellenes in Belgium» was our first inaugural event, in April 2021. Symbolically, we chose four important Belgian Philhellenes in the context of the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the 1821 Revolution, as a reminder of the active contribution of Belgian Philhellenes in the armed struggle, in the intellectual and artistic fields, but above all as a reminder that Philhellenism did not stop there. Modern Philhellenism exists and contributes actively and daily to the promotion of our culture. However, I believe it is our duty not to “rest” there, but to contribute as a nation to its creation and expansion.

Mrs Nerantzaki, what is the presence of the organisation in other countries?

Currently, there are 13 branches in 11 countries: Athens (Greece), Brussels (Belgium), Paris (France), London (England), Rome, Ancona and Palermo (Italy), Nicosia (Cyprus), Bad Neustadt (Bavaria – Germany), Tbilisi (Georgia), Kiev (Ukraine), Sohag (Egypt) and Nashville (USA).

What is the added value that the city of Brussels brings to the objectives of the Belgium branch of HICD?

Apart from the advantage of "neutrality" that Brussels has as a city, due to its Belgian particularity (Flanders – Wallonia), Brussels is characterised by its international and multicultural identity. Therefore, this enables us to address not only the Belgian – local but also the international audience.

What is the organisation’s link with Greece?

The Athens HICD, with Peter Kapsaskis as its president, was founded in March 2017 and started as the only exponent of this idea in Greece. In an effort to expand and spread beyond the borders of Greece, the HICD of Athens has given the possibility to create branches abroad, provided that they are all based on a common strategy. The Athens HICD has therefore created a network of branches all over the world, which operate independently with their own statutes, administration, actions and budget. Also, the Athens HICD coordinates the monthly online meetings between the branches representatives and keeps our network alive and united.

What was the motivation for your own involvement? What are the obligations that come with being president?

At the end of 2019, the president of the HICD Athens, P. Kapsaskis, offered me the position of president and the establishment of the branch in Belgium. The proposal even came coincidentally with the news of my pregnancy! Considering all the difficulties and consequences this can have, I accepted to take on this role for two reasons. Firstly, because cultural diplomacy has interested me and I have been involved in the past in the context of my academic background and, above all, because as an artist myself, having served the art of dance for years, I have a sensitivity and love for culture.
The main obligation is the overall responsibility of the organisation. In practice, this means being responsible for conducting activities, fundraising, coordinating the organisation’s team, meeting with heads of foreign institutions, communicating with the Embassy of Greece, liaising with the HICD branches and, finally, supervising the organisation’s interns and their research.

Which are your direct partners in this effort?

My partners are five creative people with talent, ingenuity and imagination, all with some background in arts and culture, and I am honored to work with them. They are Thomas Kardakaris, Vice President of the organisation with studies and extensive experience in music and audiovisual arts; Theodora Matziropoulou, General Secretary of the organisation with academic background and experience in museums and cultural management; Christos Gkakoudis, lawyer and director of the Brussels Greek Choir; Konstantinos Tzitros, consultant with academic background in cultural management and extensive experience in cultural diplomacy; and Kelly Agathos, consultant, actress with academic background in history & archaeology, founder of ImproBubble and Schuman show. It is also a great honour to have with us as Ambassador of the organisation, an important academic with great contribution on Greek culture, Dr. Aikaterini Lefka. Dr. Lefka is a researcher in philosophy and teaches philosophy in the Greek, French and English sections at the third European School of Brussels, as well as at the University of Liège. Finally, we have the pleasure of hosting Greek and international student interns under Erasmus+, as well as interns living in Brussels and volunteering for the organisation. The interns are taking care of scientific research and articles and their contribution is valuable.

What are the synergies you aim to support your actions?

As a priority, synergies with international cultural institutions in Belgium. We have already introduced ourselves to our Brussels-based counterpart cultural organisations, both governmental and non-governmental, and we are in open dialogue for joint future events. In fact, we have already started collaborating with some of them, through an important scientific research conducted by our intern Phoebus Voulgaris, under my guidance. The research was about different perceptions of Cultural Diplomacy and was based on the contribution (interviews) of Klub Krug (Serbian Cultural Institute), Croatian Cultural Association Brussels, European Institute of Arab Culture, Czech Centre Brussels, Liszt Institute Brussels (Hungarian Cultural Institute), Austrian Cultural Forum Brussels and Korean Cultural Centre.
In addition, we have a very good cooperation with the Embassy of Greece in Belgium and we are in open dialogue with Greek cultural institutions for joint future actions.

How many different fields of action does the effort to promote Greek culture include?

Cultural Diplomacy has a wide range of approaches and tools which are drawn from all disciplines whose activities are based on cultural values or other artistic and creative expressions. In practice, this means that we can talk about the Diplomacy of Dance, Theatre, Gastronomy, Music, Museum Diplomacy, Conference Diplomacy, but also Digital Diplomacy, Sports Diplomacy, Religious Diplomacy, Entrepreneurship Diplomacy, Scientific Diplomacy, and so on.

What are the selection criteria for the Institute’s activities and events?

The selection criteria are the environmental context, the time frame required, the technical requirements and the availability of resources. The last one is perhaps the most important as the Institute is self-funded and we are in a period when while everything is getting more expensive, the budget for culture worldwide is shrinking.

Over time, the Hellenism of the city of Brussels has been characterised by a multitude of actors who directly or indirectly engage with Greek culture. Which new needs is the Institute called upon to meet and in what ways is it differentiated?

Extroversion is an important word for the vision of the organisation and for me personally. Like every country abroad, let alone in Belgium, we have the considerable advantage of promoting Greek artists, creators, scientists, entrepreneurs and products to an international audience. I think, however, that this is missing from the activities of Greek cultural organisations here, since all of them are conducted in Greek and been addressed to Greeks. The Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy is making an effort in the exact opposite direction. For example, the event we held on stereotypes was a closed event because we wanted to make sure that the majority attending would not be Greek. We finally achieved it by reaching 80% [of non-Greeks].

However, it is worth mentioning that there are eight Greek-speaking theatre groups that actively contribute to Greek cultural diplomacy by using French and English subtitles in their performances! An additional need that the organization is coming to meet is, as I mentioned before, the synergies and cultural dialogue with foreign organizations. This is something I have never seen here before and is a priority for the organisation in its immediate future actions.

Working mother, active artist, personal time. How do you manage this extra role?

Dance has taught me dedication, tenacity, commitment and discipline and as my love for dance has proven to be far stronger than any difficulty, by the time I undertook this role, I had already decided that I would dedicate myself as long as I was primarily interested in and loved the subject. There are good days and bad days, I try to do my best and don’t look back, I have a strategy, but things don’t always go as I plan. The daily routine with a child can suck all your energy but the strength you get from the moments with them is incomparable. The existence of my daughter certainly gives another meaning in everything I do. With love we can manage everything.

A few words about your actions to date and the Institute’s future plans for 2024?

The establishment of the organisation brought some difficulties but also a lot of maturity from the beginning, due to the pandemic. We were called upon to manage and make immediate solutions in the first year, and so we managed to hold three online events.
Our first and inaugural one, as I mentioned before, had as its theme «Philhellenes in Belgium» with four important Belgian Philhellenes in the context of the celebration of the 200 years of the Greek Revolution. This was followed by the academic lecture-event on «The representations of recent crises in the Greek language: a critical analysis focusing on freedom of expression» presenting the impact of
language during the economic crisis and the evolving health crisis in Greece. The third lecture-event, also as part of the celebration, was held in co-organisation with the Greek Consulate in Liege and was entitled «Adamantios Korais and the Revolution of 1821: the moral and political dimensions of classical education». In 2022, our first live event was held in the hospitable space of the Greek Embassy, on the topic «Subverting stereotypes: a contemporary vision of Greek culture», where the experiences of three renowned Greeks living in Belgium were presented, a lecture by a Belgian professor of Social & Intercultural Psychology at ULB and a presentation by a Belgian sommelier specialising in Greek wine and ended with a «stereotype-breaking» tasting by a Greek chocolatier and a Greek winemaker. This year, we co-organized the «1st International Conference on the Theatre of the Hellenic Diaspora», together with the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Université Libre de Bruxelles, under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Greece in Belgium. The conference highlighted the activity of theatre groups in Brussels, the artistic creation currently produced by Greeks in Belgium, as well as the scientific work of professors/researchers on the theatre of the diaspora.

For 2024, what I can already reveal is that we are organising a music and dance performance with renowned Greek artists living and working in Belgium and a wine tasting event in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture!
I hope that these initiatives will be fruitful, mainly for our artists, but also for the promotion of Greek creativity outside the borders.
