Ο George Hendrik Breitner ξεκίνησε την καλλιτεχνική του πορεία σαν ζωγράφος, αποτυπώνοντας με ιμπρεσιονιστικό τρόπο την ζωή στους δρόμους της πόλης. Λιμάνια, εργατιά, καθημερινότητα ήταν συνήθη μοτίβα στα έργα του, ακόμα κι όταν μετέπειτα τον τράβηξε η τέχνη της φωτογραφίας.

Ο Breitner γεννήθηκε στο Ρότερνταμ το 1857 και έχοντας φοιτήσει (από το 1876) στην Ακαδημία της Χάγης, επηρεάστηκε από την ομώνυμη Σχολή της Χάγης. Θεωρούσε τον εαυτό του «ζωγράφο του λαού», εξού και οι καθημερινοί άνθρωποι, εργάτες, υπηρέτριες, λιμενεργάτες, αποτέλεσαν τα «μοντέλα» του.

Το 1886 μετακομίζει στο Άμστερνταμ όπου και εξέλιξε και τις φωτογραφικές του αναζητήσεις. Πολλές φορές φωτογράφιζε ένα θέμα από πολλές διαφορετικές γωνίες ή το δοκίμαζε κάτω από διαφορετικές καιρικές συνθήκες. Οι συντηρητικοί κριτικοί θεωρούσαν το στιλ του Breitner ως «ατελές».
