Le Chat, a Belgian legend, a champion of le wit belgique and a cultural point of reference, found a loving second home and is now proudly displayed upon the walls of the grandly posh and deliciously luxe, Le Meridien. To celebrate the occasion, invitations went out to BFFs, fans and family of this lofty personage.

The Cat, a fiendishly funny feline fellow monopolized the guests” attention, even managed to grab that of some innocent bystanders. He also showed off his newly conquered fluency in English, proof that the Cat is now ready to go international, to dominate, to charm the world-wide world. It was a nice evening, yes, we had fun avec Le Chat. We all have the pictures to prove it… Oh and the guy who created him was also there.

Phillipe Geluck, the Cat-Father, is something of an anthropological rarity methinks. He is a strange individual; so strange, that something urges me to call him an “irregular occurrence”… He is an artist, sure, but he lacks the pretentious half-raised left eyebrow that is generally required by law in order for one to call oneself a member of that particular clan. He is too humble, too authentic a human being. And that observation alone, justifiably raised my justifiable, albeit un-actually-justified suspicions. He is also a cartoonist. A funny man. Its his job to make people smile, smirk, or even laugh – if payed extra. That is fundamentally annoying and its reason enough, for serious people, with very serious socks, to dislike the very CO2 he exhales. But. He is nice. I mean, really nice.

Finally, and this is very, very important, mister Geluck is something of a celebrity. He is well known, well loved, well respected. And as I’m sure you know, this concentration of positive feelings towards any individual usually tends to stimulate that bit of their brains that compels them to behave obnoxiously. However, the Cat-Father seems to have found some clever hack to override this cerebral command. He’s so normal, so easy to talk to and so outrageously agreeable, anyone would think he spent the last 20 years wilfully and purposefully not noticing the trajectory of his career.

Now, I realise that wishing him all the best for his new adventures in the great Angloland might be the decent thing to say and what plain good manners require of me. And I will do so. But I will do it begrudgingly. Cause like any self-respecting spoiled brat, I dont see why we have to share our stuff. Especially our best stuff. I know what them anglophones will do, they’ll try to own this precious heritage of the Belgian people, and claim him for their side. And then they won’t even share. And I know this to be true. Cause I’m an non-Belgian anglophone and that’s what I just did.
